What happens if I have to get my meniscus taken out?

I have two really bad tears in my meniscus and the doctor says he might not be able to fix it and might have to take it out. What is the function of the meniscus? Because I play a competitive sport, I was wondering if it was taken out if I would still be capable of playing it. Thanks!
