What are your experiences with meniscus surgery?

I'm probably going to have surgery for a torn lateral meniscus. I can still move my knee, it just causes a ton of pain and often swells. I'm just worried because my dad had this surgery (among others) on both knees and now has osteoarthritis. So what has your experience been with meniscus tear surgery?
